With just a little extra time and attention it is easier than most busy commuters think to find healthy snack alternatives, even at the local corner store.

In today's hustle and bustle society, convenience food is king. It is easy to stop at the corner store and find diet-busting snacks on every aisle. Soda, candy, and hot dogs are all available with just a quick stop, but as it turns out, most stores are now showcasing some healthier options too. It is increasingly common for convenience stores to offer healthy snacks like fresh fruit or nuts. By doing so, they have helped chip away at the number of excuses for bad snacking habits, one of which is spending alot of time on the road. Here are some healthy options that are increasingly easy to find and won't break the calorie bank:

  • 13 whole almonds have about 90 calories, plus almonds are high in fiber, vitamin E, magnesium, protein and potassium. Almonds also have plant phytochemicals which have been proven to help prevent heart disease and stroke.

  • 1 small oatmeal cookie contains about 65 calories and it is made with whole grain oats. A diet which regularly includes whole grains, like oats, is a great way to lower bad cholestorol levels.

  • 2 cups air-popped popcorn with a tablespoon of butter has about 95 calories and popcorn is a very satisfying snack. It is loaded with dietary fiber which helps to keep snackers feeling full longer.

  • 1 Quaker chewy granola bar has about 90 calories and is a great way to satisfy a nagging sweet tooth with about going overboard on fat and calories.

  • 1/4 cup lightly salted, roasted pumpkin seeds contain about 75 calories and are high in protein, iron, and agents that help in calcium absorption. Pumpkin seeds have also been promoted in certain research as helping to increase lacking libidos.

  • 1 piece string cheese contains about 80 calories and is a great source of calcium, not to mention that it is fun to eat.

  • 5 animal crackers have about 50 calories which argumentatively leaves room to munch on a few more. Animal crackers are low in sodium and sugar too.

  • One medium apple contains about 80 calories and apples are a great source of dietary fiber, health improving antioxidants, and flavonoids that have been proven to support heart and lung function.

  • Although it is unlikely a hard boiled egg will be found at a convenience store, it is a low-calorie snack worth mentioning. At about 85 calories each, hard boiled eggs are handy snacks to take along in the mornings. Several eggs can be boiled at once and kept refrigerated for a few days. Eggs are high in protein, and are one of few foods that have naturally occurring vitamin D. Eggs can also be a great source of omega 3 fatty acid which aid in neurological function.
